Perhaps I’m looking too deeply into this, but I feel like it’s pretty sexist to call math rock “male birth control,” especially when Tricot, one of the most popular math rock bands ever, is made up almost entirely of women? And there are many other female-fronted math rock bands, especially in Japan. I think basically, the more notes per song, the safer your virginity will be.” “And bonus points, this genre is also a highly effective method of male birth control. The problem arises when a) you basically rely on stereotypes to be funny and seem like you know what you’re talking about, and b) most of the jokes you make about said stereotypes boil down to “haha nerdy genre is lame and gets no girls!!” Take, for example, a quote from this video where he talks about math rock: There are many fanbases within the scene that lend themselves to being made fun of, usually because of some type of gatekeeping or pretentiousness. Video: PUNK & METAL SUBGENRES 101 (from ska to grindcore)ĭon’t get me wrong, stereotype humor can be funny, especially when talking about punk and metal subgenres. #1: The majority of his humor revolves around stereotypes. There are three specific videos that led me to no longer being a fan of The Punk Rock MBA, each one providing a different point as to why I think this YouTube channel sucks. Some of this may be kind of obvious to you all here, but I wanted to write this all down and share it anyway. I didn’t agree with all of his opinions, of course, but I still thought he was cool.īut over time I kind of realized that there are actually several problems with his content that go beyond just petty disagreements. Speaking for myself, when I used to be a fan of Finn, I thought of him as a rebel against the obnoxious metalhead gatekeepers and a defender of often overhated genres, such as emo rap and easycore. A lot of people just get triggered by his opinions on music, such as his disliking of black metal, and use really childish arguments against him that really just boil down to “I’m right and you’re wrong!!!!!!” What these people don’t realize is that they’re kind of inadvertently making him more popular.

The biggest reason why it’s hard to criticize The Punk Rock MBA, and part of the reason why so many people love to defend him so hard, is because a good majority of the people who criticize him are absolute idiots. So this is in no way an attack on his character or personality, it is strictly about his YouTube channel and how he goes about making videos. He also made a whole video with Myke C-Town addressing the racism problem in metal, which is great. From one brief interaction I had with him over social media back when I was a fan of his, he seems like a nice guy. So I wanna start by saying I don’t know much about Finn McKenty as a person.
